A Stable Staple in Curated Living
Tucked away in our quiet neighbourhood, right where South Granville begins to soften into something more residential and romantic, sits a little gem we call our own French escape: The Stable House.
This soft rebellion against Vancouver’s usual “hype scene” is known for its rustic, inviting interior and soft ambient lighting that draws you in from the quiet street corner. The glow of patio string lights and the buzz of lively regulars, seen enjoying through the often foggy front window on misty Vancouver evenings, makes it feel like a tucked away Parisian gem.
We’re usually greeted by one of their very handsome French waiters, who knows us well enough now to casually use tu instead of vous. Kind, curious, and full of charm, he’s as much a part of the experience as the wine and small plates we come for. Honestly, this place and its people, are a comforting reminder that not everyone in Vancouver is stuck talking only about what they do for work and the price of real estate.
Above the bar, a chalkboard proudly lists a rotating selection of finely curated cheeses, charcuterie, and beautiful wines.
We always start with the anchovy toast: thick-cut rustic sourdough grilled just right, drizzled with olive oil, a slightly spicy-herb gremolata, and topped with a silver sliver of anchovy. It’s perfect with a chilled glass or two of their crisp Garganega, our go-to white.
If we’re staying for dinner, the menu offers a tempting array of dishes worth lingering over. My go-to is the Lamb Ragu, tender, perfectly seasoned morsels of lamb in a rich tomato-based sauce that clings to every piece of pasta. Audrey usually leans toward the Duck Confit or the cheese Soufflé, both equally decadent and satisfying. Whatever the choice, each dish pairs beautifully with a glass of red, ideally their Spanish Garnacha blend or a smooth, earthy Italian Barbera.
We leave a little buzzy with wine and softened by its charm, arms linked as we wander back to the apartment, still wondering how we manage to stumble upon these little gems, these gorgeous experiences akin to our hearts calling, as if by some kind of quiet magic.
In any case, we’re grateful to share it with you. So, if you ever find yourself near 13th and Granville, craving a brief escape to a quieter, more delicious corner of the world, take a seat at the bar, order a glass, and start with the toast.
